December 2

George Lai leads the Gathering in a group discussion about the Ten lepers:

Luke 17 : 11-19 (NRSV)

On the way to Jerusalem Jesus was going through the region between Samaria and Galilee.

As he entered a village, ten lepers approached him.  Keeping their distance, they called out

saying, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!"  When he saw them, he said to them, "Go and

show yourselves to the priests." and as they went, they were made clean.  Then one of

them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice. He

prostrated himself at Jesus's feet and thanked him. And he was a Samaritan.  Then Jesus

asked, "Were not ten made clean?", Then he said to him, "Get up and go on your way; your

faith has made you well".

Think about these questions:

1. Why did the lepers request that Jesus have mercy on them?

2. Why did Jesus respond by directing them to show themselves to the priests?

3. What is it meant by being cleansed? Did the priests do the cleaning? Or being on their    way they were cleansed in some way?

4. When one of the lepers noticed he was healed, what did healing mean?

5. Did being a Samaritan matter? Were all ten lepers Samaritans?

6. What did Jesus mean when he said "Your faith has made you well"
